This Sunday: May 11, 2008

This Sunday:
Pentecost Sunday (and Mother’s Day)

"The Answer is Blowing in the Wind" is the sermon based on Acts 2:1-21 by Pastor Bruce Gillette this Sunday, May 11th, at the 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services.

The sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be celebrated in both worship services.

Pentecost is one of the three most important days in the church year (along with Christmas and Easter). You are invited to get in the spirit of the day by wearing something with either white or red colors - the traditional colors for Pentecost representing when the Holy Spirit came on the disciples like tongues of fire and a mighty wind.

The Joyful Noise Singers will present special music in the 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services.

The Living Water Ensemble will present contemporary the music for the 8:45 a.m. worship service.

Church Organist's Musical Notes: Lydia Hazeltine has provided information about the music for the services, and it's posted below.

Childcare is available for infants and toddlers throughout the morning. Church School will not take place this Sunday so everyone can participate in the church-wide brunch. Church School will resume on May 18th.

Large Print & Children’s Worship Bulletins: Enlarged worship bulletins with the hymns are available from the ushers. Every week we also have special bulletins for children in two different age levels.

Musical Notes
11:00AM Service:
Prelude – Holy Spirit, Truth Divine (Knecht, arr Walters)

Offertory – Come, O Spirit (BOUNDLESS MERCY), Sullivan, arr. Powell

Postlude – Postlude in D, Martin

Samuel Longfellow (1819-1892), brother of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was a clergyman in Portland (ME), Fall River (MA), Brooklyn (NY), and Germantown (PA). He wrote more than 30 hymns and edited 4 hymnals. His words to the Pentecostal hymn Holy Spirit, Truth Divine is often set to the tune CANTERBURY (by Orlando Gibbons), but during today’s prelude it is set to VIENNA (by Justin Knecht).

In 1983 the Worship Task Force of Wabash Valley Presbytery (IN) was dissatisfied with the Pentecost hymns available. At their request John Dalles (1954 - ), a novice poet at the time, penned words to Come, O Spirit, set to the tune ST. KEVIN. Dalles’ hymn was published in the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal, but to the tune BOUNDLESS MERCY from the 1837 Union Harmony tunebook. A lifetime Presbyterian, he has lived in Pittsburgh, Coatesville, Lancaster, and State College (PA) South Bend (IN), and Orlando (FL). While studying in England he received his call to the ministry and received his degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1982. For more information on him, please visit http://www.cyberhymnal.org/bio/d/a/l/dalles_ja.htm. The words to these two hymns can be found at http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/h/o/holstdiv.htm and http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/c/o/s/cospirit.htm.

Mother's Day Garden Project
You are invited to share those floral blessings with the women who live in Friendship House transitional housing through the Mother's Day Garden project. This is a simple way of honoring your own mother or another person who offers nurture and support while contributing to the beauty and peacefulness of transitional housing.

Your contribution to Friendship House (marked Mother's Day Garden) will be used to enhance gardens and yards at Friendship House facilities, and the person you decide to honor will receive a beautiful floral card for Mother's Day. You will be listed as the donor, but the amount of your contribution does not appear on the card; a gift of any amount is honored. Please see the poster for more information, or see BARBARA HOOVER to pick up a donor card. Thank you for honoring important people in your life with a gift that helps once-homeless women find the joy of sharing and gardening.

Update on Church Sound System
There is a new digital audio mixer in the sanctuary. Old components recently failed and had to be replaced. After a great deal of research and discussion, the Worship and Music Committee recommended that Session approve the purchase. This state of the art equipment will allow us to continue to deliver excellent sound in the sanctuary with greater control than we have ever had. It has far more capacity and capability than the old system and can easily be expanded if needed. Although it looks complicated, it can be programmed for much simpler operation than previously possible. It will be a great help to those who need to operate sound without a trained operator to assist. We are still designing and shopping for a suitable cabinet to house the new system. Total investment with accessories will exceed $12,000. Please consider contributing to this significant upgrade that will enhance worship for many years to come. If you would like more information or would like to assist in any way, please contact Tim Jooste or Roger Jolly. Thank you!

Pastor's Bible Study on Mondays
You are invited to a Bible study on Monday mornings, 11:00AM to Noon, in our church library. We are looking at the lectionary text; the assigned readings from the Bible for each Sunday. The discussion is led by the Pastor (Bruce or Carolyn) who will be preaching the next Sunday. You can come weekly or whenever it works for your schedule; no prior Bible study experience is needed. Join us for this time of prayer, study and fellowship together!

How to Support Limestone's Mission Trip to Honduras
Six Limestone Church members, along with several Limestone Church friends, will be traveling to Honduras from June 7 - 15, 2008, to work with Presbyterian Mission Co-workers Tim and Gloria Wheeler and Heifer Project International. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Our mission team's work will include a sewing project with the women of a rural community, construction of simple concrete block homes, learning and fun activities for the children, and a medical clinic (three doctors are going on Limestone's mission trip). You are invited to support this mission trip:

Pray for the participants, as they prepare for this trip and as they travel.

Barbara Hoover is coordinating a sewing project for the women of the community where we will be working; we will take three sewing machines which have been fitted with hand-cranks, because there is no electricity in the community. Fabric, matching thread, zippers, and more are needed for our sewing project with community women. Please contact Barbara Hoover at 998-3090 for details about the specific kinds of fabric and other sewing supplies that are needed.

We will also take BoGo Lights, solar flashlights designed for use in developing countries, to be shared with Heifer Project as they work with families in the community. Look in the May newsletter for further information about donating BoGo Lights.

Limestone Church will receive a special offering on May 25th to support the church's work in Honduras. Participants are paying their own way for this trip; all contributions from the congregation will be used in rural communities where the church works-providing simple, safe housing; clean water; healthy farm animals; tools and training for growing crops; educational scholarships for children and more. You may place your contribution in the offering plate on May 25th, or you may send it to the church office: Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Thank you!
