Joining Limestone Presbyterian Church
How to Become a Member

"We are a fellowship of people who seek to reflect God's love in the world by following the example of Jesus Christ" is the statement found in every worship bulletin. Limestone welcomes all persons who respond in trust and obedience to God's grace in Jesus Christ and desire to become part of the membership of his Church.

We are happy that you would like to know more about joining Limestone Presbyterian Church. We offer joyful worship services, diverse opportunities for learning, service and fellowship. We are a diverse group of people, of different ages, with viewpoints across the theological/political spectrum; we are united in seeking to be "a fellowship of people who seek to reflect God's love in the world by following the example of Jesus Christ."

Persons may enter into active church membership at Limestone by:

  • Profession of faith (for a person who has not been a church member anywhere before)

  • Reaffirmation of faith in Jesus Christ (for a person who has been a church member somewhere in the past and then was inactive)

  • Transfer of certificate from some other church (for active members of another church)

The typical way someone joins Limestone involves several steps:

  • Participate in the opportunities that we provide for worship, learning, service and fun

  • Tell the pastors that you are interested in joining the church (see below)

  • Attend an Inquirer's group meeting

  • Meet with the Session, the congregation's governing body of elders, to be received into membership

  • Join our congregation during a worship service.

Persons who have not been baptized may do so by making their profession of faith and receiving baptism after appropriate instruction and examination by the Session. If a person has previously made a profession of faith in a particular church and is unable to secure a certificate of transfer, this person shall reaffirm publicly his or her profession of faith and a willingness to accept responsibility in the life of the church.

Our pastors, Bruce and Carolyn Gillette, enjoy talking with people and welcome the opportunity to talk with them about church membership. Please call Bruce and Carolyn Gillette at our church office (phone: 302-994-5646) or their home (phone: 302-994-0220) or email them at bcgillette@comcast.net.

This is how the Book of Order, the constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) explains church membership:

The Meaning of Membership

The incarnation of God in life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives the church its mission and its understanding of membership. One becomes and active member of the church through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all of life. Baptism and a public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are the visible signs of entrance into the active membership of the church.

A faithful member accepts Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of his church. Such involvement includes:

  • proclaiming the good news

  • taking part in the common life and worship of the church

  • praying and studying scripture and the faith of the Christian church

  • supporting the work of the church through the giving of money, time and talents

  • participating in the governing responsibilities of the church

  • demonstrating a new quality of life within the through the church

  • responding to God's activity in the world by service to others

  • living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, social relationships of life

  • working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment.

The membership of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) includes baptized members, active members, inactive members and affiliate members.

An active member of a particular church is a person who has made a profession of faith in Christ, has been baptized, has been received into membership of the church, has voluntarily submitted to the government of this church, and participates in the church's work and worship. An active member is entitled to all the rights an privileges of the church, including the right to participate in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, to present children for baptism, to take part in meetings of the congregation, and to vote and hold office.
