Limestone Presbyterians’ Mission Trip to Honduras

In late February, four Limestone Presbyterians (Barbara Hoover, Catherine Gillette, Sarah Gillette and Pastor Carolyn Gillette) will be traveling to Honduras for a nine-day mission trip with a church group from Towson Presbyterian Church in Maryland. The people in Honduras who are hosting this mission team are Tim and Gloria Wheeler, Presbyterian mission co-workers who work with Heifer Project International. Limestone supports Heifer Project through the Alternative Gift Market. Our Limestone/Towson mission group will be working in a poor, remote community that is not accessible by car, with families who have limited access to clean water, regular medical and dental care, education, enough food, and many of the things we take for granted. Yet they have a wonderful sense of community, and a deep joy and sense of hope that come from the strength of their Christian faith.

The Limestone/Towson mission team will be working in the following ways: helping with construction of homes, furniture making, sewing projects, dental care, a ceramics project, and activities with the children of the community.

Thanks to the generosity of this congregation, we will be taking about 150 Spanish children’s books and Bibles (thanks to your gifts at the Alternative Gift Market), fabric and thread for the sewing project (Presbyterian Women are providing these supplies, and Barbara is working on the sewing project team), small toy prizes to give to children after dental visits (Catherine and Sarah Gillette are collecting these), and soccer balls for this very poor community (one or two soccer balls for the whole community can bring a lot of joy and laughter—we hope to take a dozen, for several communities).

--Please pray for the mission team as we travel and work from February 24 to March 4.

--Sewing materials (fabric and thread) are appreciated; call Barbara Hoover for details (998-3090).

--Gifts of money are most welcome. Thank you to everyone who has already given gifts through the Alternative Gift Market in December. Checks can be made out to “Limestone Presbyterian Church” and earmarked for “Heifer Project – Honduras.” Our church hopes to send a generous check from Limestone Church with our mission team to present it to Heifer Project in Honduras in person.

Thank you for reaching out in Christ’s love to your neighbors in Honduras!

Background Note on Honduras: Honduras is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America, with nearly two-thirds of Hondurans living in poverty. Area: 43,278 sq. mi. (slightly larger than Virginia). Population (2006 est.): 7.3 million. Literacy--76.2%. Per capita income: $ 894. About 90% of the population is mestizo. There also are small minorities of European, African, Asian, Arab, and indigenous Indian descent. Most Hondurans are Roman Catholic, but Protestant churches are growing in number. The restored Mayan ruins near the Guatemalan border in Copan reflect the great Mayan culture that flourished there for hundreds of years until the early 9th century. Columbus landed at mainland Honduras (Trujillo) in 1502, and named the area "Honduras" (meaning "depths") for the deep water off the coast. Pastor Carolyn Gillette has led three previous mission trips to Honduras. Carolyn’s hymn, “The Storm Came to Honduras,” was used to support the relief efforts of many congregations after Hurricane Mitch; this hymn was on national PBS-TV.
