Special Times for a Special Season at Limestone Presbyterian Church
|
|
|
Ash Wednesday is February 6th:
The Ash Wednesday worship service will be at
7:00 PM, Wednesday, February 6th, in the sanctuary of the Limestone Presbyterian
Church. Pastor Bruce Gillette's homily is titled "Holy Dusting."
This special worship service marking the start of the Lenten season will be a
traditional celebration, rich in symbolism, that Christians have observed for
over a thousand years. The service includes hymn-singing, readings from the
Bible, a brief meditation, prayers and then ashes for those who want to come
forward. The ashes remind us that our lives are gifts from God and that we continue
to depend on our Lord. Join us for a special service as we begin the Lenten season.

Weekly Lenten Prayer Service:
A brief prayer service will be held in the sanctuary each Thursday in Lent,
starting February 7th, at 7:00 PM. The service will follow the format found in
the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship Daily Prayer. The service will
include periods of silence for personal reflection and contemplation.

LIVING LENT: THE ANIMALS TELL THE STORY
DAILY PRAYERS FOR THE SEASON
Animals mentioned near or during the Passion of our Lord and throughout
Scripture reflect the teaching and life of Jesus. These daily devotional
prayers focus our attention on a Savior who is homeless (the fox), peaceful
(the donkey), angry (the dove), warning (the camel), grieving (the hen),
approaching (the vulture), forgiving (the lamb), disowned (the rooster), and
finally risen (the fish). A different and devout way of approaching the cross.
Pick up a copy of this daily devotional at the Ash Wednesday worship service or
the following Sunday.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever. Amen.

Wednesday Soup & Study
Reflections on the Lord's Prayer: A Lenten Study
|
|
You are invited to join us for a simple meal of homemade soups, bread and dessert
each Wednesday in Lent, starting on February 12th at 6:30 p.m. with optional
BYOS (bring your own sandwich). Following this delicious meal with warm fellowship,
we will be doing a study of the Lord's Prayer from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You are
welcome to join us for the dinner or come later for just the study.
Do you remember the first time you heard the Lord's Prayer? Most of us not only
can't remember when we first heard this prayer, we can't remember when we memorized
it - because our memorizing was not a conscious effort; it was simply the process
of hearing the words until they were part of our very persons.
Yet most of us don't know much about this prayer, and we're inclined to recite it
without thinking. Martin Luther, with his penchant for saying things directly,
described the Lord's Prayer as the greatest martyr, "for everybody tortures
and abuses it." It is mostly, of course, the abuse of familiarity. Because we
say it so often and because its words have the flow of poetry, we are likely to
speak it without investment of either mind or heart. Jesus warned,
"In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the
more they say the more likely they are to be heard" (Matt. 6:7 NEB).
It's ironic, isn't it, that the prayer Jesus gave us is probably the most
frequent instrument of violation for the warning he gave us.
Lent is an appropriate time to consider the prayer Jesus taught us to pray in
a careful way. Participants will enjoy the many reflections and information the
author provides. Each session concentrates on a major theme or phrase of the prayer
in the hope that we will be renewed in our reflections during Lent and intentional
as we pray this familiar prayer. Pastors Bruce & Carolyn Gillette will be the
discussion leaders.
Please place this registration in the offering plate on Sunday or call the church
office (302-994-0220) or email
limestonepc@comcast.net
before Wednesday noon so we will have enough food for everyone each Wednesday evening.
I plan to come to the Lenten Soup and Study on these dates (circle dates):
February 13
February 20
February 27
March 5
March 12
March 19
