The Ghanaian Presbyterian Fellowship will hold a Summer Fest with authentic Ghanaian food,
music and games on Saturday July 11, 2009. The event will also mark a late celebration
of Ghana's Republic Day which falls on July 1. The Summer Fest will be held at the
Limestone Presbyterian Church at 3201 Limestone Road in Wilmington.
The festivities will begin with Ghanaian dishes - wakye, jollof rice, banku served with
fetri deshi, kenkey served with pepper and fish, fried ripe plantain served with beans,
and ampesi served with agushi stew. The Ghanaian line-up will be supplemented with a
cookout featuring selected grilled American fare such as hot dogs and chicken at 3:00PM
and end with I Told You So a classic Ghanaian movie at 6:00PM.
The legendary Bob Cole stars in this 70s comedy in which a family is split on whether
their beautiful daughter should marry a rich young man who appeared from nowhere.
With her brother's support, the mother encourages her daughter to marry her rich suitor.
When the law catches up with her new husband, who apparently made his money under less than
honest circumstances, the father could not help telling his wife, daughter and brother in
law, I Told You So. In addition to the movie, there are a few games
being planned; they range from Ampe, Ludu and
Oware, to Anto Akyire, Table Tennis
and Tug of War.
The Fellowship sees the Summer Fest as the first of many opportunities for Ghanaian
families in the area to take time off and enjoy some down time with familiar tastes,
sounds and sight in a safe environment. The Fellowship has made a focus on the Ghanaian
family a priority and intends to provide a sense of community that is supportive and
nurturing, rooted in their faith. There will be a literature table with health and
nutrition information intended to provide attendees with tips on how to improve their
health and be better health care consumers. The Delaware Ghanaian Association will also
hold its July monthly meeting at the same venue.
The Fellowship is sponsored by and housed at the Limestone Presbyterian Church.
The Fellowship meets from 10:00 AM till 12:00 noon on Sundays using the Hymnal of the
Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the lectionary of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
There is a prayer meeting at 7:00 PM on Fridays.
