We are a faith community striving to reflect the love of Christ in our lives. We are a learning community charged to be the presence of Christ. We are shaped by Scripture, by the examples we find in each other, and by the Holy Spirit who moves among us. As such, we are called to learn the stories of our faith told in scripture; to learn who we are as God's children, to find God's purpose for our lives, and to know the great story of God's loving and redeeming presence, no only in history, but in our world today. We students and teachers embark together on a journey of discipleship. We covenant with each other to be faithful, honest, loving, and open to hearing and obeying God's word to each of us. We will find in each other God's truth, God's love and God's power. We will share with each other God's truth, God's love, and God's power. Introduction This handbook contains a wealth of information that will help you and your child become familiar with Limestone Presbyterian Church School and our many programs and activities. You will want to keep the weekly calendar handy and refer to it often! Parents are invited to join us, or take advantage of this time to join in fellowship with our church community, or attend one of the life long learning classes offered during this time. Curriculum Materials
All ages use curriculum resources carefully chosen to suit the needs and abilities of our children. We will be using the curriculum Great Bible Reef published by the PCUSA. Great Bible Reef will have kids swimming with delight as the explore all of God's creation under the sea. Dive deep into God's Word and take the plunge into a fun, faith-filled week that will have kids flipping their fins about God's love. 3 year old through 5th Grade: Fall: “Our Faith, God’s Faithfulness”; a look at our own relationship with God in light of Israel’s relationship with God. God remains faithful. Winter: “Good News”; presents the pivotal stories that will help children understand the good news as experienced in the birth and message of Jesus Christ. Children will learn that the good news is what God has done for us in and through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Spring: “Covenant Life” to help children explore belonging to God by introducing them to stories about God’s love and faithfulness. The year concludes with stories about our response to God’s grace. Middle School Cokesbury’s Tweens in Transition: teens learn the Bible in sequential order. At this age level tweens will learn how the Bible stories they have learned fit together. They can work with a detailed timeline of the Bible. They can also begin to work with genealogies and understand the complicated family relationships of the Bible. Tweens are beginning the process of making their faith their own. They can be led into deeper understandings of Bible stories. They will work with the language of faith so that they can enter confirmation classes better able to deal with age-appropriate theological concepts. The combination of Bible overview, relating biblical truths to specific concerns in the tweens’ everyday lives, and developing spiritual disciplines starts preteens on their journeys toward meaningful youth experiences in the household of God. Senior High “The Prophet and the Prophetic Word” is the theme for the Senior High curriculum. The year begins by looking at one of the earliest prophets who played an integral role in the formation of Israel’s faith – Elijah. Other prophets highlighted are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, and Jonah. The students will learn how the title prophet fits Jesus Christ, and they will hear the prophetic voice of John from Revelation
Volunteers Needed We always welcome volunteers in our Church School Program. If you would like to assist in a classroom, teach, work in our nursery/toddler room, become a youth advisor, or assist in any other capacity, please see one of our staff. We cannot offer our programs without the time and talent of our members. I personally would like to thank all of the volunteers who make our Church School run so smoothly. - Cinda McCombie, Church School Coordinator. The Limestone Presbyterian Children's Library is located on the stage in Klair Hall. It is filled with children's books for infants to teens. There are also read-along tapes and books, and some adult resources. Children are encouraged to use the library at any time. Donations of new books are always appreciated. Additional information about the Children's Library can be obtained from Cinda McCombie, our Church School Coordinator.
In addition to learning about God and the Bible, the children are asked to learn an age-appropriate Church School skill. They will be provided a copy of this skill in September.
